Where Emojis Meet Evangelism

Engaging the lost with the Gospel using today’s media

What is Emojilism?

Emojilism is evangelism using emojis. It is an engaging and effective way to present the Gospel to the lost world around us. What begins as a fun Bible story quiz turns into a lesson on the Final Judgment and the only Way of Salvation. By creating our own unique line of Emojis and arranging them in fun and challenging Bible stories, Emojilism seeks to present the Gospel using today’s media.

Emojilism begins by presenting a challenge; “Can You Guess the Bible Story?” The large Emoji board does an excellent job at attracting people’s attention as they then line up to guess the Bible stories depicted using emojis. Stories 1 thru 5 are simple enough; the real challenge begins with story #6, The Final Judgment. When the person guessing the stories cannot get #6, the witnessor, instead of giving them the answer, explains the Final Judgment by taking them through each emoji in the story. A verse and explanation are assigned for each emoji and helps the witnessor to biblically explain the truth. The visual of the emoji helps drives home each truth. Once the ‘bad news’ is explained in story #6, the “good news’ of salvation is expounded in story #7. What began as a fun Bible quiz using emojis, ends with a thorough Gospel presentation.

How Does Emojilism Work?

Familiar

People spend significant amounts of time on their phones. Texting and Social Media have become large parts of our society and culture. And along with these...emojis. By using emojis to present the Gospel, we are using something that our current society is very familiar with. Just as the King James Bible translators knew the importance of putting the Word of God in the language of the people, so Emojilism seeks to present the Gospel in a form that is very familiar to us and the people of our society. By using emojis to present the Gospel, we are seeking to bridge the gap between this generation and the Bible. And by leveraging the friendliness and familiarity of emojis, we have created an inviting witnessing tool.

Fun

When people see the emojis used in this way they genuinely are intrigued. Why? Emojis in themselves are fun to use. By capturing that enthusiasm and friendliness and applying it with a challenge, people often are excited to participate. People also enjoy the challenge. The Bible stories presented are not so obscure to the average person as to seem impossible, but are intended to be within their reach. And with a little bit of help and guidance from the witnessor they should be able to get through all of them and know the truth about their final ‘appointment’ and the ‘only Way of Salvation’.

Factual

Though Emojilism is intended to be fun and inviting, the truth of the Gospel is never compromised. It is not a watered-down version of the truth, but a biblical and systematic way of presenting the Gospel. Each emoji has a corresponding verse for the witnessor to quote and a brief explanation for that emoji. It is ultimately through the power of the Word of God and convicting work by the Holy Spirit that one is brought to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Emojilism is just a tool to help bring that to pass. There is a logical way of presenting the Gospel. The bad news must come before the good news. Emojilism seeks to maintain that logical order by presenting the Final Judgment before the Way of Salvation. This systematic approach aids the witnessor in explaining the Gospel as much as it does the person to whom they are witnessing. The emojis themselves also provide a great visual to help the listener understand and remember each truth.

Meet Ryan

My name is Ryan Duenke, husband of Julia and father of five. At the age of sixteen, I was convicted of my separation from God through a Chick Tract. Although I had been in and out of church with my family most of my early life, it wasn’t until that piece of literature that the realization of my personal sin was keeping me from a loving God and that I was on my way to Hell. I bowed my head that day and accepted the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Since that time, I have desired to serve the Lord in whatever capacity He would have for me. I am a graduate of Bible College and have been faithfully serving in my local church for the past fourteen years in local evangelism and outreach, teaching ministries, and open air preaching.

I was given the opportunity by my Pastor to reimagine our local county fair church booth. It was going to be our second year for this outreach, and he was looking for a way to get people that were casually walking by, to be not only be engaged with our booth, but to hear the Gospel as well.

With God’s direction, Emojilism was created.
